Chamberlain Kruidenier Buildings:
From Auto Row to Urban Landmarks
Des Moines • 2008

Summary
Located in Des Moines' historic "Auto Row," the Chamberlain Building (1312 Locust) and the Kruidenier Building (1408 Locust) have been beautifully restored and repurposed as premium office and restaurant spaces in the heart of Western Gateway Park.
Originally constructed in 1916 and 1918, these buildings were home to Manbeck Chrysler & Plymouth and the Packard & Cadillac dealerships, anchoring a district that defined Des Moines' early automotive industry. The Des Moines Register once described the Chamberlain Building as having "immense pretensions (and) an exceedingly well-equipped establishment"–a testament to its grandeur at the time.
A Vision for Revitalization
In 2008, Hatch Development Group led a major historic renovation, transforming these iconic buildings into Class A office and restaurant spaces while preserving their architectural integrity. Today, these properties overlook the renowned Pappajohn Sculpture Garden, offering one of the city’s most sought-after business addresses.
