Because of the growth of HDG and the need for more low-income housing apartments, Hatch Development Group expanded with two new partners, Michael Kiernan and Ryan Galloway to form Hatch, Kiernan & Galloway Development, LLC, in 2023. The new firm, known as HKG, immediately embarked on expanding its portfolio to include homeless shelters, homeless supportive housing, historic preservation while we continue to build LIHTC projects.
HKG creates real estate developments in urban neighborhoods and small towns in Iowa. HKG has developed mixed-income, affordable housing communities in the Des Moines neighborhoods of historic Sherman Hill Neighborhood, Drake Neighborhood, Indian Hills Neighborhood, Martin Luther King, Jr, Neighborhood, and the East Village neighborhood.
We expanded to the Oak Hill Jackson and the Medical District neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, the East Side neighborhood in Dubuque and near the commercial district of Ames. We have expanded our attention to small towns in rural Iowa and built LIHTC and historic preservation projects in Waverly, Newton, Winterset and Clinton.

Michael Kiernan
The experience Mike had, as a former Des Moines city councilman, former chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, a contractor and a son of a century old Iowa farm family, has prepared him to maneuver the labyrinth of the financial, construction and development world of urban and small town housing development. As a partner in HKG, he has taken charge of the management of the dozens of multi-family properties and over 900 apartments. He’s a no-nonsense manager with the tenderness of a grandfather. As a father of two children, one with special needs, and a broadcast journalist wife, Erin, he certainly understands the management practice of a “problem solver”.

Dale Todd

As a three-term city councilman of the second largest city, Dale has a thorough knowledge of city procedures and local government issues. This commitment to local government and its responsibilities to serving the needs of its citizens drives Dale to use that background in tailoring specific projects to reach the low-income families that need the most help. His ability to foresee the concerns of city officials in large and small towns has provided a sense of comfort with our relationship with city officials. They know that our team understands the financial and political issues. He and his wife, Sarah, have a son with special needs, Adam.
